So... You think you want to try Flyball?
You and your dog will need a few skills before starting flyball training.
Fortunately, the skills needed ARE quite basic and are not as extensive as
needed for most other sports like agility, herding, retrieving, or competitive
obedience.
Most importantly, your dog has to have a good recall around distractions.
Your dog should be friendly and well socialized around other dogs and people. If
your dog loves to retrieve a ball, then you have come to the right sport! The
degree of ball drive a dog has is usually proportional to the amount of focus
he/she will have on the game. If your dog will retrieve, but isn’t fanatical
about it, there are training techniques we can suggest to increase the
motivation to retrieve.
Flyball class time is precious - both handlers and dogs want to learn to
RACE! So, we ask that you accomplish your basic training work before coming to
class. You can do this on your own, or in a basic obedience class. There are a
number of excellent trainers in our area who can help you work on getting a good
recall and on socializing your dog. We’ll be glad to provide some
recommendations.
