Flyball is a very fast paced relay race between two teams of four
dogs. Each racing lane is made up of a start/finish line, then 6 feet later the
first jump, then every 10 feet another jump (for a total of 4), and then 15 feet
beyond the last jump a spring-loaded box which holds a tennis ball. All four
dogs must jump over the jumps, trigger the box, grab the tennis ball, and then
return over the jumps meeting the next dog on the team at the start/finish line.
Many teams are composed of three large dogs and one small dog. The height of the
jumps is based on the height of the smallest dog. The shorter the jumps the
faster the dogs can run.
The team with the fastest time with no errors (dropped ball, running
around the jump, early pass) or all reruns completed is the winner. Currently,
the World Record is 15.22 seconds (each dog averaging less than 4 seconds to run
over 120 feet!).
